world for us to be having this conversation. I was a little stunned. Ok, a lot stunned. And I processed everything from trepidation, to flattery, to concern, to worry, to slight fear and finally back to simple curiosity. “Ok, but, ummm, why?” This wasn’t the sophisticated woman about town asking. This was the shy, quiet girl who was always surprised when someone found her attractive. I recognized her in me, said an internal hello, and sat back to let her have this conversation. She’s my quiet voice of reason. My center when vivacious Sindy is putting herself at the edge of jeopardy. “Why?” He laughed. “Well, you’re alone. You’re beautiful. And, you said your plan was to just go back to your room after you ate dinner. That’s a crime where I’m from. Well, at least a misdemeanor. Didn’t you say this was your first time in San Diego?” He waited for my answer, still very relaxed and quietly confident. His lack of bravado and flirting somehow convinced me that he was sincere; being a genuinely nice guy, and it gave me the feeling that I had absolutely nothing to fear. I felt realness from him and it brought out the realness in me; somewhere between shy quiet me and, the confident, sexy, Sindy me. I gave him a real smile and an honest opinion. “Well, thank you, that is very sweet. But, I’m okay. I’ve had a long week in Long Beach. out here for almost thirty minutes waiting for you to walk out that door. I obviously can’t take you out to dinner but I’d love to take you somewhere. Will you walk with me and we can see what you’d like to do?” I tend to analyze things when I’m unsure. Although I like spontaneity, I also want to make the best choice in each situation. My mind was buzzing. He was obviously very young. Why the interest in me when I’m so much older?…Why would he wait all of that time for me?...What would we possibly find in common to talk about?...What if he’s a stalker type?...Aren’t I tired?...Do I really want to go back to my hotel and sleep?…So many thoughts. But, another group passed by laughing, loud music spilled out of a club as the door opened, and all of a sudden I picked up the energy of the night and people around me. I thought, “What the heck am I thinking about. Just go, have fun and see what happens next.” So, I flipped the switch to “On” in my brain, smiled and said “Well, it is very nice of you to wait for me. I’m flattered. And, you’re right. Why waste a night? Sleep can wait until later.” We turned and joined the crowds of people until we got to a club with a line of well dressed young adults lined up outside. He told me this place was great and asked if I like to dance. I don’t just like to dance. I love to dance. You almost could say I live to dance. As we learned bits about each other and chatted about his studies (his name was Mike and he was in medical school), I could ...
