made for only my hands, they would then be bare. And, I would have to kill you with them alone." There was certainty in his voice. When the image of his face became clear, the once thought snakes became nothing but long intricately braided hair, blowing in the strong wind. The three men realized that though fearsome in appearance, he was just a man. They spread out to assure their offensive. The man then stopped, his sword pointed downward beside him. "Let your sword fall before you, unless death is your wish," the guard in the center repeated, his volume increased. "Do you not desire to know for whom you so foolishly threaten?" the tall man asked them. "Only so I can sing of your death in the long house while I consume mead with a woman between my legs," returned the guard. The other two guards laughed, each one a slight distance on both sides of the man. The man laughed too, his smile remaining as he spoke. "For I am of the House Gulbrand, the first born son. I am Kieren, the Eagle of Fire," he announced. "The Eagle of Fire is a myth," the man scoffed. "A story fathers tell sons." "What kind of man steps forward bearing the title of children's stories as if men should fear him?" the guard to his right teased. "Maybe he is not a man at all but a child in the mind," the other guard to his left said. "Now I have taken offense," Kieren proclaimed, raising his sword with both hands and forcing it into the ground in front of him. Still, he smiled. ... "I shall kill you first," he said to the one on the left. "I shall kill you second." Kieren bent his head indicating the one in the center. Then letting the third one know, he said, "And, you..." The men laughed heartily, but it was their mistake. Kieren did go left with speed the guard was unprepared for. He did not see Kieren until it was too late. The guard in the middle came running toward Kieren with his sword held over his head, only to fail. Kieren had done him in with the guard's own sword. By the time the the third guard made his way to Kieren with his battle cry, his former friend's sword was pointed at his throat. It was then that four more guards stepped forward out of hiding. However, before they could charge or make a sound, they felt the cold blades of Kieren's men at their throats. To the guard Kieren stood in front of, with the tip of the sword still barely managing to not pierce the surface of his skin, Kieren said, "On this day, you should be glad that I am a man of full senses and restraint." Kieren slightly pressed the sword into the guards neck for emphasis. "Now run. Run to the leader of your clan and tell him of this man that spared your life. Tell him that I am coming for what is mine. I shall not be thwarted. He can decide if I come as friend or as foe." The man backed up slowly and put his hand to his neck, relieved at the small amount of red on his fingers. "Run," Kieren calmly said. The man turned and sprinted off.
