neckline pulled taut away from her in an attempt to prevent the material sticking to her breasts but it was futile. I could see everything . Her hair dripped onto the floor. Her feet were bare. “Do you need a towel?” “No!” she said quickly. “Definitely not. Actually, I need some scissors.” “Scissors?” “Mm-hm. If you have them. Please.” What the hell did he want scissors for? I stared at her but she appeared to be just as clueless as me. Scissors ? It seemed so bizarre. “What kind?” I asked. “Like haircutting? Sewing? Gardening? Craft?” She bit her lip, thinking it over, then she shrugged. “One minute,” she said. “I’ll find out.” She skipped back over to Cooper’s apartment and stuck her head around the door. I stood in my doorway, trying to hear what he said but all I got was a dull murmur. The girl came back. “Sewing would be best,” she said sweetly. I went inside wordlessly. In the kitchen I found a pair of large sewing scissors. They were made of stainless steel and were surprisingly heavy. The blades were silver and incredibly sharp. Such a regular household item suddenly seemed dangerous. I opened and closed them. They made the sharp kind of sound that scissors make. It still seemed inordinately cruel. Why? Why ? I heard the scissors before anything else. The sharp swish and a quick gasp. A gasp. A gasp was good. A gasp was better than a scream. “ B-b-but what are you doing ?” “ What does it look like ?” Another swish from the scissors. “ There ,” Cooper said. “ Much better. You’d have caught a cold like that .” Her clothes? The dress? Was that it? “ How am I gonna get home ?” “ You’ve got a coat, haven’t you ?” “ Yeah, but-” “ But nothing. Get on the floor. Face down .” Half an hour later, Cooper had come, the girl had come and I had come twice. I felt too guilty and exhausted to stand up and fell asleep with my back against the wall. *** Days passed, routines blurred, hours faded into each other. I went through each working day like a robot. Telephone calls, paperwork, extended coffee breaks. Nothing seemed to matter anymore. I waited for Saturday night impatiently, wondering who Cooper would be screwing, whether she’d be more attractive than her predecessors. I even practiced opening the door, perfecting the motion in time for the expected stranger. She was tall and willowy, wearing a t-shirt and panties. Her hair was jet black and her skin a smooth olive colour. The skin around her wrists was indented. Handcuffs. Her soft brown eyes locked onto mine. “Hi. Could I ...
