foyer. "I like the way you decorated your house." "I'm going outside to get your ball, wait there, I'll be right back." I immediately disobeyed him and walked across the living room to where a row of wood framed photographs sat on top of the fireplace mantel. Most of the pictures appeared to be of friends or f****y, but there was one that stood out; he had positioned this particular picture front and center relative to the others, as if to give it the place of highest importance; it was a picture of Conner and a girl, an Asian girl, just like me, but older. I heard him come back into the house, footsteps slowing as he approached me from behind. It probably was rude of me not to turn and face him, but I couldn't take my eyes off of the Asian girl in the picture, something about her was giving me goose bumps. "I found your soccer ball Isabelle." "Who's this?" I pointed to the photo of him and the girl. "Kiyomi loved you very much; I can see it in her eyes." "Yes, and I still love her." Kiyomi's straight black hair hung down to the middle of her back, much like my own, and her hint of a smile reminded me of the painting, "Mona Lisa." There was also something else about her that held my attention, it was like I knew her from somewhere, but that was impossible, she would have died just about the time I was born. "Do you visit Kiyomi at her grave?" "Yes, I go there often." "It must be lonely to stand above where she's buried, I mean, it's got be hard to be so close to her and not really be with her." "That's exactly how it feels." Conner stood behind me, looking at the picture over the top of my head, and without thinking I leaned back against his chest as if I'd known him for a long time; it just seemed so natural, I was totally at ease with him. "Kiyomi was pretty. Is it still hard to be without her after all these years?" "I miss her every ...
