reception, he of course had to sit at the big main table in the front of the room for dinner, while she had to sit at a table with her parents. From his vantage point, perched up at the front table that was raised off the ground, he could see the whole room fairly well, but he could see Millie's table perfectly as it was almost directly in front of him. She was sitting with her back towards the front of the room, so she didn't see him observing her, but she seemed to have felt it a few times, turning to look at him and giving him a little smile. As he looked at her back, so beautifully bronze and the perfect vision of girlish loveliness, he was becoming overrun with feelings of guilt, sometimes laced with fear, for what he had done to her. But she didn't seem to mind, the way she smiled at him. Nor did she seem inclined to tell anyone. This calmed him immensely. Still, he was not happy at all as he sat and observed his friend. Her father was not a good person. He was a d***k, and abusive, and as the dinner progressed he made several trips to the bar, returning with glasses of beer for himself and his wife, and each time also carrying a stiff scotch. She gave him a wide-eyed look and nodded her head in the direction of her table, where her father sat slouched in his chair, visibly d***k, occasionally turning to his wife and saying something nasty. The wife, Millie's mother, just sat there and looked uncomfortable. &#034Yeah,&#034 he said. &#034Sorry about that.&#034 She gave him a little smile, like she as glad for his concern. They stood together there at the edge of the dance floor a bit awkwardly, not actually able to touch each other (which is certainly what Brian wanted to do, and, he thought, maybe she did as well), while they watched the opening dances--first the happy couple, then the bride with her father, then the groom with his mother. Finally the dance floor opened for the rest of the guests, and the two of them joined a huge rush of people running out onto the floor and dancing energetically to all the classic wedding fare. He tried to stay as close to Millie as he reasonably could without drawing too much attention to either of them. Mostly he wanted to be close to her because he was so happy to see her smiling face as she danced. It was wonderful to ...
