market collapse. Thursday afternoon was actually the first time Zee saw Madison for more than a minute that week, the two of them ending up with a mid-day free period together. They sat companionably at a lunch table together, both idly doing sketches while their mutual friend Alexander went on about one of the math teachers. At one point, as she lifted her head to ask Alex a question, she tossed a folded piece of paper into Zee’s lap. Opening it, he saw a cute anime sketch of the two of them sitting at a cafe table. Beneath the image were the words “Pick me up at the corner by my house? My mom doesn’t like bikes.” He nodded to her, smiling, to let her know he’d gotten the message. Then he started a new sketch, of a girl and a boy on a bike flying down a country road … - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - That night it was drizzling a bit, so he was dressed in his military coat when he pulled up down the street from Madison’s place. He pulled off his helmet to get a good look at the area, a middle-class suburb of the city proper. Nice houses all in a row, a good neighbors kind of place. Sorry if I kept you waiting out here.” She picked her way over the curb and onto the street to stand next to him. “No worries!” She pulled a hairband out of one of her jean pockets and quickly bound her hair back from her face. “Got a helmet?” Zee reached back to pull his passenger helmet off the left saddlebag and handed it over with a little flourish. It took a minute of adjusting and Zee pointing at bits in the helmet before she could get it over her head and settled, but once it was on she seemed confident. She slid onto the back of the bike with him, fitting her frame tightly to his back and slotting her feet into the passenger pegs. Zee sighed as she wrapped her arms around his waist. He loved owning a motorcycle. The k1200 wasn’t BMW’s fanciest bike, but it was a great touring ride in California. Especially so with a passenger. Zee turned the key and the bike roared to life, a now-familiar hum in between his legs. Zee asked “All set?” The mic set from his helmet transmitted his words right into her helmet, ensuring they could hear each other even at high speeds. “All set.” She sounded very cozy back there, and much less nervous that he’d expected given the note. “You ride before?” He asked. “No, just always wanted ...
