He was chatting up a red-head with close-cropped hair that had spent the day working with the reptile house when Alex tapped him on the shoulder. Zee smiled. “Hey man! Vanessa, this is Alex. Alex, this is Vanessa. She’s on her school’s speech team too!” Alex’s eyebrow went up. He and Heather had never actually been dating at the Halloween party, and he hadn’t had a date in a while. “Hello Vanessa!” He said expansively. “Um, would you excuse my friend and I for a minute?” She nodded, and Alex took Zee aside to the food table. Zee put a mini-burger in his mouth while Alex said, “Dude, you need to talk to the girls. I think something’s wrong.” Zee looked at him questioningly. “I dunno. They were working together all day, and I think something happened between them.” Alex said, concerned. Zee swallowed. “Where’d they go?” Alex pointed wordlessly back along one of the paths towards the bird house. “Okay, I’ll go talk to them. I probably wound Madi up this morning being in such a good mood.” “Do you want me to go with you?” Alex asked. “No, no. Actually,” Zee grabbed his shoulder and swiveled with him back to look at Vanessa. She was talking with another student and laughing. “I want you to talk to Vanessa. She’s good people, and I think you guys would hit it off great.” Eve whispered in his ear, “Potter.” “Ask her what house she’d want the sorting hat to put her into.” Zee said out loud. She actually does seem like good people. I wanted him to have an in.” Eve responded. Zee chuckled to himself as he walked further along the path. He realized he’d been walking a while, and started getting a little worried. That was when he spotted Sydney sitting on a bench on the side of the path. “Hey.” He said. When she looked up, he gave her a half wave. “Hey Zee.” She didn’t sound upset, but she didn’t sound like her usual in-control, positive self. He sat down on the bench next to her. “What’s up? Alex said you and Madi had a thing today?” She shrugged. “Man, I honestly don’t know what’s going on.” She sighed. “I’m not good at this chick stuff. Like, I can do the secret handshake and everything.” He laughed. “But a lot of the girls at school … eh. I don’t do passive.” She shook her head. Zee laughed, a short bark. “That is true. Did she say what was up?” “No, not at all. After we got out in the sun and helping the kids she cheered way up. While we had down time she was real chatty, kept going on about this and that.” Sydney looked down at her outfit. She’d worn outfits like it to school a bunch of times. “She even kept complimenting my outfit, which was weird. I don’t even like this top that much.” She plucked at the front. “Dude, she was right this morning. It’s not ...
