Four months of mud, mosquitoes, sickness! Four months of temperatures that ranged from intense cold to unbelievable heat. That is how long it took to travel from Iowa to Montana in 1866. I think I can remember every step of the journey. We started off by loaded up every possession we had into our wagon, and set off to make a new life. I was only eighteen, but Thomas, my husband, was older. We didn’t want to go to Oregon or California like earlier emigrants did. That was usually a six month journey. We decided that Montana was going to be our destination and where we would make our home. Some days we only traveled ten or twelve miles. On a good day we made twenty. Sometimes the land was so flat we could see where we camped the night before behind us in the distance. At night, we usually slept outside on the ground. I woke up to terrible hail and thunderstorms four times. It rained so hard it soaked through everything. There was very little privacy in our group of twelve wagons. We would settle in for the night in our typical “U” formation. In our camp fires we could see what everyone else was doing. If we couldn’t see, we could always hear. I am sure our traveling companions would not care if they heard us, but we tried to be discreet. Sometimes I would get smiles and winks the next morning from others, but we never said anything and neither did they. When we finally arrived in Montana, we purchased some land from the agency near a stream. At two dollars an acre, I thought we had paid too much, but it was a beautiful location. We made a lean-to to live in (or, more accurately, to live under) while we worked for months to clear the land. Even with more opportunities for sex, there seemed to be no child for us. After a day of clearing the lands, often we were too tired or sore to do anything. Thomas seemed to be getting discouraged that I was not getting pregnant. I think he was so focused on it that sometimes he couldn’t keep his erection long enough to fill me with his sperm. Frustrated, he would get up and leave me laying there. Many times, if I wanted satisfaction, I would have to finish it myself. The following year after the lands were clear and our crops were planted, Thomas built the house he had promised. Our neighbors helped us with ours and we helped them with theirs. No one lived very ...
