It had to happen I suppose, I had not heard from her since she brutally dumped me, but one day, out-of-the-blue, my ex-girlfriend, Imogen called me. It was a spring dusk, unseasonably balmy. I was sitting on my terrace for the first time that year, nursing a beer, looking out at the sea and marvelling at the events of that afternoon with Liv and Xanthe. Not to mention stressing about what my duties as Sara’s Bridesman might involve. Liv had stayed back at Xanthe’s for some reason, to study I think. Then the phone rang and I was gobsmacked. “Oh, Hello!” Imogen said brightly, somehow even managing to make that sound aloof: 'air hair lair!' I hadn’t thought about her in months, so much had happened since I last saw her I felt like a completely different person. So why was my heart trying to jump right out of my mouth? “Imogen.” Her laugh, God, that soft cackling laugh. So infectious. I thought of Liv and Xanthe, Sara, I thought of Anne-Marie, Jess, Orla, Charlotte, Mazzy, of Guapa. Like I was constructing a girl wall between us. I thought of Pearl and it crumbled, suddenly I didn’t want to say anything else. Imogen’s laughter drifted into the telephone’s crackling void. “So, BC! How are you? Or should I say, Fluffer!” Again with the laugh, she was on a speakerphone in a very echoey place, the sound of water splashing in the background. “Brilliant, actually. What’s that noise, you in a boat?” “Actually, I’m in the bath…” Her naked body flashed into my head. She was a statuesque ...
pre-Raphaelite redhead with skin like moonlight – or so I used to say – not curvaceous but elegantly proportioned with a vivid red bush. Her sex and nipples the palest pink. “And naturally I popped into your mind.” “Well, yes. You did.” She shifted in the bath, each splash was conjuring the image of a wet, stirring limb. She cleared her throat. “…Anyway, I met someone you know the other day. Jessica?” For a minute, I didn’t know what she was talking about. “Oh Jess, hasn’t she gone yet? I thought she was travelling.” “She was! It was in... um, in Berlin.” “Good.” “You know we’re old school friends? We couldn’t believe it, meeting there of all places.” Jess’s warm smile filled my head. “How is she? We had a surprisingly good time decorating her uncle’s house.” “Yes, she said. That was the other weird thing, finding out you two met. We simply couldn’t believe it.” “That’s a point, how…?” “Hmm well…” The little laugh. The seductive one. Where did that come from? “We were talking. She asked me why I was in Berlin, and I told her… Oh God this isn’t still difficult for you is it?” “Nope.” And I meant it. I think. I didn’t care about the “excellent oral” she got there from her sister’s ex. If that hadn’t happened, Sara would never have shown me what to do, and Fluffer would never have existed. “Well I suppose I was boasting a little and I noticed she was smiling, you know in that way when people have something even better to tell you and they are just waiting for you to shut up so ...
