"Goodnight, Sweetheart"', I said, kissing my daughter's cheek, "Your Mom and I had a nice time with you tonight. Thanks for having us over." "I was glad for the company, Dad", Lenore smiled, giving me a quick goodnight hug, "It's been kind of lonely here this week with Len out of town. With just me and Elsa here, I really needed some adult time." "Night Mom", Lenore yawned, giving her mother a little peck on the cheek. Pat looked at her daughter worriedly. "You sound like you need a good night's sl**p dear" she said, stroking Lenore's hair from her forehead "You've looked tired all night." "Wow, thanks for the complement, Mom" Lenore laughed off her mother's comment, even though she really did feel incredibly tired. "I guess it's just been a long week." "Come on Pat, your daughter needs her rest", I called out from the car. "Get some sl**p honey", Pat said, kissing her daughter once more, "We'll see you at church on Sunday, and don't forget to call that alarm service first thing in the morning. It's not safe to be without it working." "Yes Mom, I will, I promise." Lenore said, rolling her eyes skyward. I drove slowly home quietly humming an old Sinatra tune, One For My Baby. "Aww, don't worry about Lenore honey," I said, leaning over to give my ... wife a kiss on the cheek, "I'm sure she'll get a good night's sl**p, now that we're out of her hair." She'll get a VERY good sl**p"' I laughed secretly to myself. I turned over, and looked at the clock. It read 1:30 am. Pat was snoring loudly in the bed next to me. She'd taken her Ambien and would sl**p like the dead until 9:00 the next morning. I got up quietly and went into the living room to get dressed in the dark. Grabbing my wallet and keys, I stealthily opened the front door and stepped out into the night. Walking to the car, my heart began to beat more quickly, worried that I shouldn't be out doing what I was doing. I almost turned around and went back inside, but the thought of my wife's snoring made me turn back to the car. I started it up and began to make the short drive back to my daughter's house. I pulled the car into the driveway, killing the lights as I did so. "No need to attract any excess attention to myself", I thought, setting the break and shutting off the engine. I sat looking out the windshield at the quiet drive before me, the car's soft pinging matching the thumping beat of my still pounding heart. Looking up at the darkened house, I again felt a slight hesitation. this was bad, no way around it. If I followed through with this, and things went wrong, I could be in real trouble. "No, don't think like that." I chided myself, "I haven't gone this far to back out at the very last minute. If I don't do this, I think I'll ...
