Dannye was my seventeen year old step-sister. She became my step-sister when my dad married Marianne, my new step mom. My real mother had abandoned our family for another guy, and while my mom and I were still close, that special bond we had never really solidified as I got into my teenage years, especially since her new husband didn’t want “bratty teenagers” around his house. I was happy when my dad married Marianne, because for the very first time in a long time, there wasn’t a lot of screaming and yelling in the house and because Marianne was cool. She never pushed me to do anything and she left me to do whatever I wanted to do. Yes, I had chores to do, but once they were done, I was free to go to the mall, hang out with friends or just be lazy. I had two real close friends--Paul and Mickey. Paul was one year younger than me and Mickey one year younger than Paul. I liked Paul the best, because he had a sister who was a cheerleader and although she was a year older than me, I thought she was next best thing to peach ice cream. Unfortunately, she had her own circle of friends. Dannye was a year younger than me. For the most part, we got along pretty well, except when she invaded my gaming room. “You don’t touch my games,” I told her, “…and I won’t play with your dolls or make-up.” When we were younger, we used to have make-believe family fights with my GI Joe always winning over her Barbie Doll. As we grew older, we did silly things that only the two of us could relate to. ...
“Please, please, please,” Dannye begged, “I have to know what my eye shadow looks like before I put it on.” I acquiesced. Dannye took a step back from me, after marking me up and said, “Blue eye shadow is not your color.” I had to agree. We were sitting by the pool, drinking a beer, Paul and Mickey and I. I remember the summer night like it was yesterday. We thought we were cool, drinking beer. I had just turned eighteen and was in my senior year of high school. Paul and Mickey still had a bit of maturing to go. Paul nodded his head at Mickey and they both looked up at the second floor bedroom window. Dannye was walking back and forth, talking on her cell phone. She was silhouetted in the light of the room. I hadn’t given much thought to the physical development of Dannye, mainly because she was my step-sister and I saw her every day. “Man,” Paul remarked, “Dannye has some great ta-tas.” “Dude,” I remarked, “that’s my step-sister!” “She still has some great ta-tas,” Paul reiterated. I chalked Paul’s comments up to Paul being Paul. He was a bit on the crude side. A few days later, as I was lying on my bed, Dannye wandered in and asked me where everyone was. “Who is ‘everyone’?” I asked. “Paul and Mickey,” she replied. “I don’t know, probably off circle-jerking somewhere,” I replied. I was annoyed because I was trying to play a new on-line video game. Dannye rolled her eyes and plopped down on my bed beside me. “What are you doing?” she asked. “Playing a new game,” I replied. ...
