house sat on around an acre with gates and circle drives. She had me stop along the curb between houses, and seemed interested in one particular house a little ways down the street. "What are we doing, April?" "Shh, not too loud. Slouch down a bit so we're harder to see." I did so. If what April was having us do was as stupid as it seemed, I really didn't want to be seen. "Are we actually going to the movie?" "Yes, in a few minutes. I need to see something first." We sat there quietly a few minutes, as if on a stakeout, when a car turned the corner to come up behind us. "Get down!" April whispered, pulling me by the jacket down flat on the seat with her, me on top of her, stretching my side out a little much and twisting me a little too far. I felt the car go by, grimacing until she released me. We peeked our heads up carefully as the car continued down a few houses, then pulled into the house April had been watching. "Who's that?" I asked, only getting the impression of a man in the driver's seat. "Nobody," April said, now craning her neck and moving around to try and follow the car. I followed her eyes, trying to see what was so important to her. The car came to a stop in front of the house, where a man got out carrying something and walked up to the house. It was too far away for me to make out more than vague details as to what he looked like or what he was holding. Just coming out was a girl and another guy. The girl and the new guy walked past the old, and as she came ...
out into the sun, I recognized her. "April, is that Shannon?" April was still looking intently for a moment, then seemed satisfied and eased back. "Yeah. And Greg," she replied, somewhat absently. The two got into another car that was in front of the house. "We're not going to try and follow them, are we?" April looked over at me. "No. I know where they're going anyway. Duck down, don't let them see us as they go past." We piled back onto the seat and waited a minute until the coast was clear. "Okay, let's go to the movies. Hurry, I want to beat them there. Don't pull up besides or behind them or anything, though." As it turned out, we didn't get there until a few minutes after them, but had little difficulty catching up in the lobby. April bought tickets while I was instructed to stand inside watching them to see where they went. It wasn't that crowded, but there were just enough people that I didn't stand out. "So, what are we seeing?" I asked when April found me against a side wall. "I don't know yet," she answered. We watched a minute until April and Greg, along with the group of friends they'd met, filtered back to a theater, following at a distance until we saw where they'd gone. "So are we seeing this one then?" I asked. "Yes." "I don't know what you're thinking, but this isn't going to work. If they actually see me they'll know I'm your brother." "Don't worry, dweeb. They don't know you from a hole in the wall." "They already suspect it might be me, what if they look ...
