small slope from the road and started walking. It wasn’t long though before she called out: “What are those holes, Erik?” “Oh, you mean these?” Pointing at a small hole in ground, perfectly round and maybe half a metre deep with grass covering the bottom. “Those are, ok, I have no idea what they are called in English, but they are called ‘gjettegryte’ in Norwegian, which translates directly to ‘guessing pot’, a pot like the one you make food in,” Then I went on about how they were made, totally nerding out, like I often do. The short version comes down to sand and stone being pushed around by a river which slides them over the rock below and make a hole, the process can take millions of years. “Right up here there is a really large one,” I wasn’t kidding when I said really large, but I don’t know what she thought when I said really large, but this one was massive. “Oh, there is some ice!” Pointing at a white spot a bit further up. When we got up to it, she was just left staring. This pot was about 5 meters in diameter, and from what I had estimated from previous visits, it was about 9 meters deep, although it was filled with water. On top of the water was it’s own little personal iceberg, even though it was in the middle of the summer. Leaping, I jumped on top, and with the iceberg moving slightly, she let out a shriek. “Don’t be so nervous, it’s fine,” I said, assuring her that I wouldn’t fall off. When I was done with playing on the iceberg, and her being done with kneeling ...
by the hole, trying the see the bottom, which she couldn’t, we settled down on a small patch of grass and moss in an otherwise barren landscape. As we ate, we mostly stared in silence. The view up there is truly stunning, and I appreciated just sitting there, together with my girl, enjoying the amazing view. We sat staring the direction we came, towards the road, and in the background, in the distance there was a wall of mountains. It looked like a huge wall that stretched from a valley up into the sky. The tops were incredibly sharp, in contrast to most other mountain tops as a result of being so high that they avoided the ice that covered the whole of Norway about 10 000 years ago. They were coated by a layer of very white, reflective snow, and the very tips were obscured by a fog, giving them a slightly mysterious feel. From the sharp, pointy tops, the snow transitioned into a black stone, which gave it great contrast, and then, even further down, a bit of vegetation finally formed. The spread green specks soon covered more and more, until the plateau abruptly turned into a cliff, not unlike a wall. Streaks of different layers of stone made stripes in the stone, and then, at the very bottom, the vertical cliff abruptly turned into a steep slope of green. The bright green colour was the thing that always caught me the most. The stunning, bright green in contrasting to the snowy mountains behind and the brownish black rock. We were sitting on the other side of a valley from ...
