department already. Can you believe it?” I asked. “Abbie, from high school, climbing the corporate ladder.” “She better be careful. If she get’s promoted too far the other bigwigs will feel threatened because she’s actually competent.” We both chuckled a little bit before David changed the subject, “Well I think that’s enough talking. We’re guys! We need to play some video games, and I’ve got one that we haven’t played in years.” David reached into his bag and pulled out an old Playstation game. NHL 2000. “You’ve gotta be frikkin’ kidding me!” I said as a huge grin spread across my face. “Wanna play the first game like old times?” “Hell yeah!” I pulled out my old PS One and got it set up. I should probably explain the significance of this game. David and I played this game endlessly over the summers when we were kids, but we hardly ever played against each other. It wasn’t because we weren’t competitive, rather the opposite actually. Each game we played against each other turned into a tense competition where tempers flared. In the end, his mom forced us to play on the same side because we got too rowdy. As it turned out, we actually enjoyed that more. We would play through entire seasons, usually thrashing the game’s A.I. Our team had the highest penalty rate of any in the league, and most of our players should’ve been suspended, but we had a blast and won the Stanley Cup over and over. Our old memory cards were lost a long time ago, so we ended up playing an exhibition ...

It was a strategy that worked perfectly because the game’s A.I. was absolute crap. Halfway through the second period and my third fist fight, I abruptly paused the game. “David,” I began, “how long do you have to wait to tell a girl you love her?” To his credit, David wasn't too startled. He was used to my questions about how to deal with people. I had been socially inept in college and even worse in high school. David responded in the manner any rational human would. “Well that was out of the blue,” he muttered in surprise. “Not, ‘Hey, can I ask you something?’ Or, ‘Hey David, I was wondering...’” “David,” I said tersely, “I’m serious.” David ran his tongue along his gums like he always did when he was thinking. “I know you are,” he said finally. “That’s not something you would ask unless you really wanted to know.” David set his controller down on the floor and sat back in his chair. “Let’s take a break. I think this conversation is gonna take a while.” David waited for me to set down my controller before he asked, “First of all, I’m going to assume you’re talking about Clara, right?” I nodded. “Okay then, I want you explain your feelings, how long they’ve been around, when you first felt them, everything. I know it’s hard for you to put emotions into non ...
