reaching for the tissues. "Of course I love you, sweetheart, it's just that... it's just that you're my mate's wife. He's saying his last goodbye to his mother today, I just wanted to be there with him today." Bill tried to reason with Caroline, trying to evoke some compassion. Caroline began sobbing even more fervently, tugging at the bedsheets, covering her bare breasts. "Nobody understands what it's like, we've been married for years, Malcolm tries his best but the medication isn't working, nobody understands, nobody cares." Bill held her by the shoulders, stroking her back, talking to her gently. "I do understand, love, honestly I do. Would I be here today if I didn't love you?" Jan kissed Rachel on both cheeks as she walked her to the front door. "I promise to visit you soon, Malcolm, and I really will this time." Rachel's voice croaked slightly as she held back the tears. "No worries, sis, love you." Malcolm said his usual goodbye, not knowing if he would see her again other than at another funeral. The clicking of the door behind Rachel was the symbolic gesture of the 'doors closing' in Malcolm's life. *** "I love you so much, Malcolm, you know that don't you?" The look in Jan's eye was that of sincerity, it was the look of unconditional affection, it was the look of yearning. "Yes, I know, Jan, I know you love me just as much as Rachel, or even more. Just because our lives have moved on, it doesn't mean that I've forgotten your kindness." Malcolm's eyes were speaking louder than his words, they were speaking of wanting the past, they were speaking of maternal love, they were speaking of a certain kind of yearning. Jan stroked Malcolm's ...
