    This is a true story. I have changed the some of the names for grins and giggles. Others, including store names and geographical locations are true. Fall, 1982. These neat toys we use to communicate with were either in their infancy or very expensive. I was finishing up University and when things slowed down in what I liked doing, I found myself alone, and needing a job to pay the $80.00 a month for the six by nine foot room, some food, gas for the 1966 Chevy Malibu. I lowered myself and decided to go retail and stopped by a local department store. It just so happened the head of security was in personnel,motor one look at me and said, &#034What do you know about shoplifting?&#034 I thought it was an accusation, confessed to nothing and he said, &#034I will train you...you're hired.&#034 For 30 or so hours a week, I walked around different stores (Weinstocks had five in the Sacramento CA area) caught shoplifters and I did not have to invest in several hundred dollars in clothing to make $3.35 an hour. I was making $5.80, so my life was pretty good. As was the case with the Arden Fair store of this now defunct chain, employees had to park way in the back. My &#034seemed right&#034 assignment was I walked the females or anyone else that wanted, to their cars, made sure they got in the road, An employee of a mall competitor was pistol whipped,marked and robbed in the parking lot.     November evening in 1982, as I returned to tell the bosses all the employees were in their cars and out I was ready to clock out, the manager of Linens and fine China, Ms, Waldo approached me. &#034My car is in the shop, I was hoping you were going my direction and give me a lift home. It's really too far to walk and I would feel safe with you.&#034 The extent of our conversations prior to that point had consisted of the socially acceptable hello. When I started working at that chai I did see her walking around .Sac State. I would say &#034Hello,&#034 she would smile and return the greeting and that was about it. &#034I live downtown, but nothing is really out of my way. Sure.&#034 We walked to my car. As we approached she commented, &#034I always wondered who owned this car. The paint is fantastic.&#034 As I unlocked the door and held it open for her, she commented, &#034Wow, a real gentleman.&#034 &#034So, what direction? She mentioned how comfortable the seats were. I mentioned how I trained the labor for a brick BBQ for the upholstery job.
