1. Paying Carlos

    I had studied Spanish in high school and found I had a facility for it. I continued studying it over the years until I became bilingual. I later traveled extensively in Mexico. That is how I discovered this small town in north central Mexico. There was something about it that touched me, and I decided to move here. I was open about my sexuality, and was accepted by most people I came in contact with. My immediate neighbors had no problem with my being gay and we became good friends. These people were extremely poor and even though they worked hard they barely earned enough to support two people. However, as usually happens, they had kids. They had an older son, Carlos, then two daughters and two more sons, but Carlos is the one we will deal with here. He was about twelve when I came into his life and over the next three years I got to know him well. He didn’t get along with his father, who was demanding and constantly ordered Carlos around. Carlos would talk to me about life and the things teenagers are curious about. A lot of his questions were sexual in nature. About sixteen is when he started rebelling, not only against his father, but grownups in general, and his rebellion increased as time passed. He had always been a nice-looking kid, but during this time he had developed into an outstanding presence. He had a golden tan skin color, but instead of black hair and dark eyes he had something like light brown or dark blond hair and greenish hazel eyes. But the main thing was he somehow exuded sexiness. It just seemed to be an aura around him. By the time he was eighteen he had impregnated two girls and either didn’t recognize that or they didn’t wish him to be around, which was understandable, because he was unpleasant to be around. At least to those people who had any say in his life. He then met a young woman who was five years older with a child from a previous partnership who saw something in him besides his good looks. They paired up and she had a stabilizing effect on him. He settled into a job and appeared to be a better father than his had been. One day a couple years later Carlos came to me for a loan. I had often loaned money to his father to carry him over to the next payday, and he’d always paid me back. I gave Carlos the equivalent of twenty dollars, but there was no payback. A few months later he came back for another loan of sixty dollars, saying he’d pay me back both of them. I decided to take a chance, and gave it to him.
