conspiratorially, a teasing smile on her lips. “I guess,” I said, but I couldn’t help the grin that slipped onto my own face. “Did you have a good time at your party last night?” Daddy asked. I blushed deeply. Mom caught it, but I was glad Daddy missed it. I rolled my eyes and ate my breakfast in silence. “That reminds me,” Mom said. “Could you tell the neighbour to be over for six, Nora?” I told myself to be rational; that talk of parties led Mom to thinking about our dinner party tonight. I told myself she had no way of knowing I had been up to no good with Levi the night before. “Sure, Mom,” I said. “I’ll send him a text.” “A text?” Mom seemed surprised. “You’ve got his number?” “Oh, yeah,” I said with a shrug. “He told me to text him about tonight.” Well, if she was surprised I had his number, she couldn’t have been thinking what I had thought she was. “Alright,” Mom said. “Six o’clock. Tell him to be hungry.” She had accepted this more easily than I had expected, but I couldn’t complain. I also thought telling Levi to be hungry was opening up a ... can of worms. I left early for work to allow myself time to text on the way. As soon as I stepped out the front door, I pulled out my phone and wrote a reply to Levi. “I did, thank you very much.
