were jealous of John not because of your mother but because of the car, he drove. “Jealous of a car,” I said in wonder. Debbie explained John’s parents owned a restoration shop where they turned old car new again. His father also taught him all about cars and building them. John and your mother used to help his parents all the time restoring cars or rebuilding engines as they shared the same passion for cars. “Mom, can rebuild an engine?” I asked with that look on my face. “Yes, for John’s parents taught them both very well in hopes someday they would take over the business,” My aunt said. She explained that John’s car was the nicest and the fastest in town. Your mother and he both had proved it many times by drag racing other cars through 11th and 12th grade. Not one boy had ever beat John and his car. It soon became a past time for most of the kids in town. Each Friday night the boys and girls would get together on a long deserted back road of town under the supervisor of John and your mother. Like your mother, they had also grown up with him and her. The boys played sports together, they fished together and they raced together. Steve and Ryan were the only two in town who ever came close to beating John. “It was the weekend after prom,” my aunt said. “This was to be the biggest race ever and also the last race,” she added. This was our last year of school. Some would be moving on to college like your mother and John. Some would leave to explore the world while others like Steve and Ryan had enlisted into the army. “However, that was not to be,” my aunt said hanging her head. “Why what happened and why is my mom so unhappy when she speaks his name?” I asked. “Because that man should have been your father,” my mother said returning into the kitchen. “I loved that man with all my soul,” she added sitting down. “He loved you back just as much,” my aunt replied. “Will someone please tell me what happened?” I asked again. My mother shook her head yes, as she went on with the story. She explained that John always managed the races on Friday night. He would check the road to make sure it was safe to race. We always posted cars at each end keeping others from driving on the ...
