She was obviously very unhappy and hadn’t given up yet. I ate my soup, but after the meal, while Irena was sulking in the living room, I said to Olga, “I don’t mind if we take Tanya and Sonya with us. It is your decision.” “Really? That is a lot of k**s.” “They seem like nice girls, and Irena really likes them, and I love her, so there is no problem.” Olga stood in thought for a minute, it was funny how much she looked like Irena. “Ok, tomorrow we will talk to the orphanage director. There was a playground, but the equipment was rusty and falling apart. Half the windows were broken and boarded up, some with only paper. There were k**s everywhere, there must have been 20-30 in the yard alone. Irena was there talking to the twins, I don’t think they even saw us enter the building. There was an older k**, maybe around 16-17 sitting at the desk. He looked really bored as he sat there reading an old beat up book. He looked a little surprised when we came in the door and marched up to the desk. When we asked for the director, he told us to wait and went into a small door next to the desk. Soon a worn out looking lady came out. Olga said that we wanted to talk to her about two of the k**s. She sighed and led us back into the office. The k** at the desk was a bit disappointed, he really was trying to hear what was going on. There were two plain chairs in front of her desk. We carefully sat down. The director pulled out a small ledger and asked, “Which k**s and what did they do?” Olga replied very rapidly and the conversation got way too fast for me. The general gist was that we were going to America, and that we wanted to take the twins with us. The director got to “Ooh” and “Ahh” over Olga’s ring, and then we got down to business.
