another night. The night stands were clear, so I polished them with Pledge and stripped the bed of its covers. I could smell the scent of her on them but knew better than to stand there and sniff them. After changing the bed, I headed for the bathroom and cleaned up the shower and basin. I swapped the towels and wash cloth. The trash wasn’t used, so I left it alone and headed back into the guest room. Picking the trash can up, I found those dang panties I had tripped over, along with wrappers and a McDonald’s cup. She had to have bought that near the highway and ate in the room. I looked at the door to make sure nobody was in the hallway and took a closer look at those panties. I studied them over carefully but I couldn’t see anything wrong with them. Heck, they didn’t even look dirty to me. But if she threw them away, I guess she didn’t want them, so back into the trash bag it went. I changed the trash and packed up my stuff, giving the floor a look over. I couldn’t leave the few specks of stuff, so I grabbed my broom and dust pan. Remembering her brushing the wrinkles out of her blouse, I did the same with her bed. I stepped back to look at the room and fussed over the wrinkles in the curtains. It looked pretty clean and neat, but it was missing something. I ran down the back stairs and broke off a stem from the knockout roses growing by the fence in the back yard. Entering into the room once more, I laid the rose on a napkin along with a mint in the middle of the bed. I ...
thought the mints were stupid, but my dad insisted on doing that for the guests. Stepping back again, I thought it made the room complete. It didn’t look so stupid now. Maybe she’d forgive me for making her lose a pair of bikini briefs, but I didn’t have the money or the means to replace them. I finished the rooms in time for lunch. I lucked out and had some rooms that weren’t too hard to clean. But it was Friday and there was sure to be a lot of work to do come tomorrow. I stopped by the office to turn the room keys in and found my dad still pouring over paperwork. “Bills and taxes!” he grumbled, seeing me come through the door. I hung the keys on the hook as he asked me, “How were they?” “Some were better than others, but nothing broken.” I replied. “Think you can mow the yard after lunch?” he asked, not looking up from his desk. I dropped my shoulders at that question. Bob Jenkins was piecing together a go-cart and I wanted to be there when he took it out. But I would have to cut the yard sooner or later so I relented, “I guess.” “Good.” he said cheerfully. “Here.” and slapped an envelope on the desk. Oh yeah, it’s Friday. Let me guess how much I made this week. ‘Ten bucks a day times seven days...’ I could make more at McDonalds… if I had a ride to get me there and back. Here I was being a housekeeper plus gardener plus dish washer plus… never mind. I didn’t want to hear the “Free room and board” speech so I said, “Thanks” and took the envelope. “Take your sister’s to her ...
