laughed again. “Guilty as charged. We got the zebras though. Cost a fucking fortune.” “Well, I guess it is the biggest day of your life.” “Third biggest,” Silver said dryly. “Take three. Action.” “Third time lucky?” I suggested. “Yeah. Maybe,” he said. He’d smoked his cigarette down to the butt and he stubbed it out and dropped it off the balcony before lighting another. “It’s probably just another mistake.” I shot him a glance. I wasn’t a relationship counsellor and didn’t quite want to have a hand in fucking up his marriage before it had even begun. I sucked hard on my cigarette, smoking it as fast as I could. I wanted to leave, but we were in a room we shouldn’t have been in so I couldn’t leave Silver alone and he was causally chain-smoking like he had all the time in the world. “Sometimes I think we’re opposites,” he said. “I got with her because she’s a good girl. But it’s a constant fight for me to stay good. Sometimes I just want to be me again. It’s like I’m acting. All the fucked-up stuff I did before, I kind of miss it. And there’s a hole in me that being with Evelyn and being vanilla just can’t fill. And I want to fill it.” His voice had dropped low and I could hear the tight urgency behind his words. “I just want to… lose control. She doesn’t even like it when I fucking smoke for god’s sake. that’s what I am. That’s what I was fucking raised as. I have nothing else to do. It’s a sham. Everything is so fake.” I stared at the lights below until my eyes blurred. “We aren’t actually meant to be in this room,” I said tentatively. Silver shot me a look. “We’re not in the room. Technically, we’re on the balcony.” I laughed a fake laugh. “You know what I mean. I could get in trouble.” He didn’t say anything, just puffed away at his cigarette in a thoughtful way. I swallowed hard, trying to drop another not-so-subtle hint. “Do you have the time?” He stubbed out his cigarette and let the butt fall into darkness again. His eyes were distant. He put the packet of cigarettes in his pocket and I straightened up, ready to leave. But he didn’t move. He leaned his weight against the railings and took in the view. “Um, my shift is probably over.” I said reluctantly. “It’s getting late. Do you have the time?” He turned his head unhurriedly until his eyes caught mine and then he said, very slowly and purposefully, “Do you have the energy?” I felt my heart sink. “Look, I’m sorry, Mr Silver, but-” “Call me James,” he said and he straightened up and stepped towards me. For some reason, I found myself backing away. I swallowed. “It’s been a long day. You just have some pre-wedding nerves. Your fiancée is a beautiful woman.” “I know,” he said, stepping closer still. “She’s beautiful, intelligent, kind, but totally fucking square. I want… triangles. Stars.” I could feel the railings pressing ...
