surrounded by nothing but banknotes. I wondered what I was saving for. Sometimes I would blow a couple of grand at one of the casinos but I was too smart to waste much. I had this ingrained attitude that while money was available, I should get it and hold onto it. I remembered growing up in my parents’ house, not being able to afford heat in the winter and clipping coupons every weekend. We never had the things other kids had and though my parents would say we didn’t need material comforts, I always felt like the odd one out. Money made life better. It was the way out. Money was everything. *** James Silver had money. A regular guest, he always stayed in the best suite at the Palace and blew thousands at the casinos night after night. He’d had a string of wives and girlfriends and even the gossip sites couldn’t keep up with his latest exploits. He wasn’t a businessman, but the son of a businessman. His father’s firm was one of those companies so large that no-one knew what they actually did. All we at the Palace knew was that when James Silver stayed, he tipped well but his room was always trashed. His third wedding was the reason he was to stay at the Palace Grand that June. His tips were still generous and everybody shared the opinion that his fiancée had turned him into a new man. No hookers were delivered to his room and not once did he head for the strip clubs he’d previously frequented. “He must be totally in love with her,” I commented on the morning before the wedding day as James Silver and his fiancée strolled arm-in-arm out of the lobby. “I’ve never seen anyone change so much.” Ethan and I were loitering near the front-desk, catching up on each other’s latest fucks whilst people-watching. I had just had the story of a sex-addicted sixty year old woman recounted to me and it had left me looking for a change of subject. Ethan was more sceptical. “Guys like Silver don’t change,” he said drily. “It’s all a show. Inside, he’s probably cracking up. I guarantee you he’ll do something crazy soon. One woman isn’t enough for him.” “Maybe she is,” I said hopefully. “She’s so pretty. And I heard she started her make-up line from scratch. You know, Cherry Kingston swears by her foundation?” “Wow,” Ethan said sarcastically. “How fantastic.” “I think it’s lovely,” I said defiantly. “Some men just need to find the right girl and that’s it. They’re sorted.” Ethan rolled his eyes. “You are ...
