1. Held captive at the Border

    My work as a Journalist took me to Upper and Lower Slobovia and as everyone knows it is not wise for a single young western woman to enter Lower Slobovia. He went on to explain that some of the items that I was bringing into the country were actually considered contraband, and they have heavy penalties for them. I immediately started to apologize and beg forgiveness but he said the law is the law and there was nothing he could do. Again I broke down crying, begging for some other way to avoid jail time. The word punishment rang in my ears as I sat there alone in the stark room; I wondered what he meant by punishment. As I looked down at my short skirt and my bare legs I suddenly started to feel very vulnerable. I sat there for about an hour when Peter came back into the room and placed before me a confession to sign. He pointed out to me that if I signed the document and accepted the conditions of the punishment I would probably be released in two days but if I chose to go through the court system it could take up to a month and the result could actually be worse.
