    Ernest Gaines, known by most as ‘E’ or ‘Big’, bounded down the corridors of Presbyterian Regional Medical Center wheeling a patient towards discharge. It was shortly before 8:00 a.m. on Saturday which meant this was his final task of his shift. He made it to the waiting area and brought the chair to a stop as the elderly man peered out the window for his f****y. “What’s going on,” a fellow orderly asked. “Can’t call it,” E replied. “I hear ya, man. He started up his metallic brown 2003 Chevy Trailblazer. After setting his playlist, the five-foot-eleven-inch, two-hundred-forty-pound, brown-skinned, bald head man, whizzed away. He made a stop at the convenience store down the street from his house to grab a few items – a case of Bud Light, a pack of Twizzlers, and a pair of cigarillos. The candy, of course, was for his girlfriend, Mona. The beer and smokes were all his. With any luck, and he knew it would be so, she would be already be gone and there would be a plate of bacon waiting in the microwave. Big pulled into the driveway of the cozy three bedroom ranch. He unlocked the door and walked in to smell the pork. He was thrilled. He threw his beer into the fridge and pulled a towel from the linen closet. He washed up in the shower quickly and wrapped damp cloth around his waist. He grabbed a cold one and his stash of weed so he could roll his blunt. Satisfied, he went out onto the covered patio and began to blaze but not before grabbing another brewsky. He had worked his way through a good half of the loud and was now feeling pretty good.
