as she moved down the hall away from my door. She must have been talking to my Uncle Hank (Her brother, and Carmen's dad) I listened for another few moments before my curiosity got the best of me. I walked out of my room and down the hall in search of my mother. It took me a minute to find her, she was sitting on the front porch with the cordless phone up to her ear. I stepped out the front door to silently get her attention. ~"Is everything ok?" I whispered at her genuinely full of concern. I could hear Hank talking a million miles an hour on the other end of the line. She looked at me blankly for a moment and nodded. ~"Go back to bed Kyle everything is fine." She replied waving her hand at me to go back inside. I obediently did as I was told and went back to my room. I could tell that not everything was ok. But I wasn't about to press the issue. Why would Uncle Hank call here in the middle of the night to check on Carmen? Especially all the way from France? I eyed her questioningly. ~"Ok I'm really confused now." I replied to her. "I'm grounded to my bedroom all week and now I get rewarded? Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining, it's just not what I was expecting to wake up to today." I cracked a smile at her. ~"Yea well maybe we've had it planned for a while. It's not like we have the option to leave you here alone all weekend. You've proven that you're not mature enough for that." She countered and looked down at her coffee. "And while we're on the subject, unless you particularly like being confined to your bedroom and grounded from your Karate classes you need to forget about that phone call you over heard last night. Do we understand each other!?" The last sentence whipped out of her mouth so sharply I felt it's sting from across the room. ~"Yes mam." I answered her compliantly. The silence in the room was so thick I could have sliced it with a butter knife. "So what's this surprise or occasion?" I asked her trying to turn the conversation back to a pleasant one. ...
