1. Storm Days

    It was the middle of January, My Dad was away on a business trip, my older b*****r Joe was away at University. Mom and my oldest s****r Christine (Chrissy) had left early that Monday morning, as Chrissy had an important exam at the beauty college she attends. Shorty after they left the snow started and the weatherman was calling for a lot of snow. The storm was blowing out of the Rockies, and our place is about forty miles outside of Billings, Montana, along the Fork River. I was up early and listening to the forecast. I did not think there was much chance of the buses running. Mom had left at 6am. and about seven thirty came the announcement that school was cancelled. I looked outside, and you could not see much as the blizzard, was pretty much on us. Victoria (Vicky) my other s****r came down and said "So, we cancelled?" I nodded and said "Yes, they just annouced it." She smiled and said "See you about noon time." And she went back to bed. I listened to the weather forecast one more time. They were calling for at least thirty inches of snow, and winds to blow it around. I got busy and went to the woodshed, and brought in lots of wood for the big stone fireplace. Then I roamed around and made sure the candles and our oil lamps were within reach. I figured it was only a matter of time until the power went out. Once I had that done, I had a nap on the sofa.     in the doorway of the living room and looked around. "Good, you brought wood in." She said. Then she looked around some more, and said "Got the candles and lamps ready. You are right on the ball." I smiled and said "Someone has to do the work, while you get your beauty rest." She smiled at that. I had some dinner, then did up my homework for the next couple of days. Vicky looked at me and said "Why are you doing that?" I shrugged and said "If the lights go out, then it is done. I doubt there will be school tomorrow, I doubt Mom and Chrissy make it home tonight. This way, I have it done, and will have nothing to do, until the bus comes again." She nodded and said "That's a good idea." She soon was doing her homework. During a break I said "If it is better tomorrow, and assuming no school, I may get the snowmobile out." Vicky was working, but she stopped and said "That might be fun." I had my homework done, and Vicky was nearly done when suddenly the power went off. It was not real dark in the house, so I did not have any trouble getting a lamp lit. I soon had a couple going. I put them by Vicky, one on each side. She was about another twenty minutes finishing up. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon, and you could hear the wind howling outside. I wandered around for a bit, and even took the flashlight and checked the temperature outside. The thermometer outside the door was right on thirty two degrees.
